Bolero

Bolero

The Bolero is a smooth, sophisticated, sentimental, love dance, reminiscent of a slow Rumba. The emphasis is on fluidity and graceful turns with much communication between partners. The slow music enhances a feeling of romance and combines controlled movement with dramatic musical expression.

History

The Bolero has the same Afro-Cuban roots as the Rumba and is thought to have originated from Cuban or Spanish folk dances such as Danzon and Beguine.

Characteristics

The Bolero has some different characteristics from its Cuban relative the Rumba. Its long sweeping side steps and use of rise and fall create a softness that makes this dance unique among the Rhythm dances. The expanding and contrasting dance position makes a very dramatic and romantic statement. Most new students to Etobicoke Bolero dance classes adapt quickly and enjoy the process of learning immensely.

Music

Originally a Spanish dance in 3/4 time, the Bolero was changed in Cuba into 2/4 time then eventually into 4/4. The music in Arthur Murray Bolero dance classes is frequently arranged with Spanish vocals and a subtle percussion effect, usually implemented with Conga or Bongos. You’ll notice that while Rumba music is very rhythmical, the lyrical Bolero sounds more like a Latin Ballad.

Bolero songs and artists include:

  • Con Los Años Que Me Quedan , by Gloria Estefan
  • Perfidia, by Nat King Cole
  • Sin Excusas Ni Rodeos, by Julio Iglesias
  • From Here to Eternity, by Frank Sinatra
